Second Annual Earth Day Celebration
On April 16th, 2009 the USGBC Massachusetts Affiliate hosted a gathering of the area’s leading green architects, academics, scientists and community leaders in its second annual celebration of Earth Day. The event took place in the foyer of Genzyme’s LEED Platinum building which was a beautiful and appropriate space to bring together people who share a common goal to learn, network and promote greener building practices and lifestyles.
The main celebration of the night was focused on the 2009 Innovation in Green Design Award. This year Sasaki Associates took home the trophy for the green building renovation of their own office building, the historic Chase Mills in Watertown, MA, a riverfront assemblage of buildings dating back to the 1850s.
In 2003, Sasaki initiated GreenLAB, an on-site trial of various green materials and methods, and in 2005 they began planning their green renovation guided by the LEED-Existing Building criteria.
The Innovation in Green Design Award jury commented that the project was especially commendable because it creates a ripple effect by influencing employee behavior which they can practice in their own homes. The Sasaki team also uses extensive metrics and evaluation to measure the success of their work, with a commitment to continual improvement. The LEEDGold certified project includes energy, water, and resource conservation measures.
The award jury recognized excellence in two other projects by awarding honorable mentions. Elton + Hampton Architects, for their Lawrence MA project titled “Our House for Design & Technology” and Energy Efficient Building Technologies for their highly efficient and unique sustainable affordable housing project.
Thank you to all of the sponsors who are able to support this event.
